Happy 4th Birthday Rocko! *

Today was Rocko’s birthday, but he also shares the celebration with one of my little cousins. We are celebrating his fourth year of life here at our home, being born in our shed along with his six other siblings. Rocko has been with us ever since he was born, and he has turned out to be such a sweet little companion.

I just wanted to post this for my fluffy, little fella; Happy Birthday!

March of 2012 *

Yes, one of my most favorite months of the year has begun! March is my #1 favorite month because one, my birthday is at the end of the month. Second, Rocko’s birthday is also this month. Spring starts this month too, which gets me excited for all the sunny weather that lies ahead of us. There is so much anticipation for the warm seasons of spring and summer, but it will also be the end of my favorite season of winter. There won’t be any snow, but there will be the possibility of gardening, swimming, biking and going outside without having to put 4 layers of clothes on. That would be nice for once. Winter in Atlantic Canada is a bit harsh, but our spring and summer are always enjoyable.

The first big event that will be happening this month is Rocko’s birthday, which is at the end of this week. He will be turning 28 in doggy years, but only 4 in our normal years. Rocko has been growing up so quickly, he is already bigger than Rocky. Rocky does have a smaller build than Rocko, but still, he is getting pretty thick. It might just be his winter coat though, who knows?

Wild Flowers in Our Yard

Gardening this year will also be something to look forward to, because we will be bringing our garden back to life after 2 years of no use. Hopefully the soil will be fertile enough to use by now. The last harvest we had was really worth all the work, so I can’t wait to see what we manage to grow this time around. It isn’t just vegetables and  fruits that I want to grow this year though, I also want to start growing little flower gardens around our house and do some yard work to spiff it up a bit. The house needs a little TLC, so I want to work on the exterior of it during my free time. I will probably start with cleaning the perimeter of the house first, and getting rid of any weeds or other unwanted things around that area. Next I will probably want to repaint our steps, as the paint has worn off them after years of use. Maybe within the next few months I will get started on this and post some pictures to show you my work.

Groundhog Day *

I completely forgot to post about Groundhog day yesterday, so I wanted to do a little update on what went on around here.

For those that don’t know what groundhog day is, (which may be few, but some people might not remember how it works) it is an event that happens annually on the 2nd of February. According to folklore, the groundhogs can predict the future of whether there will be an early spring or longer lasting winter. If it is a cloudy day, the groundhog won’t see his shadow which means there will be an early spring. If it is a sunny day however, the groundhog will see his shadow and supposedly scurry back into his burrow; which will mean 6 more weeks of winter left to go.

This year our groundhog, named Shubenacadie Sam, didn’t get to see his shadow. Along with the majority of the other groundhogs’ predictions this year, we will have an early spring. I was a bit sad when I found out because winter is my favorite season, but it is nice to hear that we will be getting an early spring. This time around my mother and I plan to start our gardens early, so at least we have something to be looking forward to.

February of 2012 *

Wow, time really does fly! A whole month passed and it is already the second month of the year. This month I want to change a couple of habits of mine so that I can actually keep up with all my resolutions and stick to them. I’d also like to introduce a few more ideas that I have for Avian Ambition and keep up with the ones I already mentioned. These include the themed days of the week, weekly doodles, picture of the week, and more info for My Quest for The Bird.

Another thing that I’d like to do from now on is stick to a main theme for each month of the year. February’s theme will be diet and food, so there will be informative posts on dietary requirements, info on nutrition, more Foods for Birds entries, and other things related to this theme. For each new month, I will give them either a new theme or a theme that was already used to elaborate on. Aside from these posts, I’ll still be writing about my pets and myself.

So far, I like where Avian Ambition is going. If I keep this up, I know that I’ll be able to accomplish many things this year. I hope everybody else has had some type of success this past month, and that they’ll have the same amount or more of luck in the coming days.

Happy New Year of 2012!

Because it is the first day of 2012, I thought that it would be a cool idea to post the list of my New Year’s Resolutions that I quickly put together for this year. Most of the ideas were original, but I got some of them from reading other people’s lists. I made this list using the Paint and GIMP programs I have on my computer, and it was pretty fun. I might decide to print this off to put on my wall later, but I think I will end up editing it a bit more before I do that. Here is the first version:

I wish everyone else the best of luck this year with their resolutions and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!
