Shutting Down for a bit…

I’m going to take a break from blogging. I think it’s for the best because I’ve just been poking around lately. Not into it as much. Avian Ambition will probably be deserted for quite a while before I decide on opening it again. Just posting this to let everybody know that I’m in fact not dead, just on break. See you some day in the future!

Rollie is Doing Better

Rollie really is doing better. He was actually back home on Wednesday. We picked him up from the vets and brought him home. The vets said that they couldn’t do much else for him, and that he would have to recover on his own from now. Rollie is now drinking all on his own, so we are really excited for him. He’s been making slow progress, but we think he’s doing better.

With other news, the cockatiel that I was looking at was already sold on Tuesday night. So he is no longer available. I’m having some real bad luck with these ads. I wonder if I should just contact a breeder to see if they have any available. That would also mean buying another cage if I get a cockatiel, but what about a lovebird? It is a pretty hard decision.

I’ll probably be looking around the Kijiji classifieds again to see if there are any new ads for birds. I might be back later to write about what I find.

Worried About Rollie

I have some very worrying news to write about tonight. It’s about Rollie. He’s at the veterinary clinic as I write this. We brought him in at around 1:30 PM today. He was showing really serious symptoms of some unknown cause yesterday and this morning, so we made an appointment with our local vet to see what the problem was.

Yesterday, Rollie had suddenly started acting weird. We found him laying down at an odd angle outside where we keep him. He is having trouble walking. Every time he goes to take a step, he wobbles around and can’t keep his balance. His eyes are continuously bobbing around in turn. He tilts his head to the right, and his right eye rolls more than the other one. He vomited twice as far as I know, and peed himself this morning.

At first we thought it had something to do with the sun, being so hot these days, but it isn’t. The vet said that it is most likely chemical poisoning, or something of the like. He also mentioned that there might be damage to Rollie’s liver and brain. It was a lot to take in. I wasn’t so sure though, it really looked like he had what is known as Vestibular Syndrome in dogs. He is getting old.

Rollie can either recover or go downhill from here on. They put him on fluids to help with his dehydration problem. They’re also giving him electrolytes. He must have lost more fluids when he vomited yesterday. If he starts convulsions, there won’t be any point in proceeding from there. I really hope that he’ll recover by the time we call them back tomorrow.

It’s hard for me to write much else, so I’ll be back to update sometime tomorrow.

And More Days Go By…

No word from the lovebird owner, perhaps they just don’t check their emails often enough? I have no clue. Today I replied to an ad that is selling a 9 month old cockatiel due to allergy issues, so I might hear from the owner later. Some of these ads get me really angry though because of the ignorant people who are selling. I guess I’ll have to deal with them if I ever want to get a rehome.

A picture I took off of the ad of the cockatiel that I’m interested in.

Not much has happened in the past week. I’ve enjoyed my summer vacation so far with trips to the movies, to the beach and to friends’ houses. Our garden has been started, and there are already little greenies sprouting everywhere. So far our tomatoes and peas are flourishing, and the weather has boosted their growth. We’ve had sun, sun, rain then more sun. It’s been perfect garden weather, and beach weather. One of these days I’m going to have to bring my camera along and get some nice shots at the beach. There’s always something interesting that we see on our trips there. Always.

Flora from the beach last summer.

All of the furry ones have been well, but I’m beginning to worry about Rocky. He has trouble keeping on any extra weight, and as a result he looks malnourished. Normally we wouldn’t be too worried since he is always on the move due to his pacing disorder caused by being kept in a shelter kennel for so long, but this is different. His ribs are beginning to show through his skin, and I don’t like it one bit. I’ve given him walks to calm him down and settle his anxiety though. I think it might be time for another trip to the vet.

Otherwise, nothing really has come up or changed. Nothing important enough to post about anyway. I might start posting more of my drawings while I wait for something to come up. I remember that I began doing this a while ago, but it began and ended with just the one drawing. So I’ll post something up later to make up for it.

A Lovebird, Maybe?

Back on to the topic about getting a new bird. I think I may have found one.

I am still waiting for a first response from its current owner. I wasn’t so sure about getting another bird from the pet store, so I decided to either get a rehome or one from a breeder. I checked on Kijiji Classifieds online yesterday for anyone that was looking for a new home for their bird. That’s when I came upon an ad for a lovebird. The ad stated that the owner wanted to get their lovebird a new home for two main reasons. One, they are going to move. And two, they want someone else to give their lovebird the attention it deserves; the owners won’t be able to in the near future.

It’s almost meant to be. The ad seems a little sketchy, but we will see how it turns out. The owner is offering the bird and the cage together as a package for a pretty ideal price. I hope that it’s because they respect the bird and don’t want any random person taking him, but they also want to give him a good chance with getting another home by having a lower price. I’m not sure. The price seems a little odd, but we’ll see once I get a reply from the owner. Which reminds me. The ad didn’t give much information except that the lovebird might be male (they were referring to it as a ‘he’ in the ad), the cage that comes with him is “very large” and he is accustomed to people and not other birds. I included lots of specific questions about him in my email to the owner to find out more.

Mystery Lovebird

There was also lots of comments about him being a friendly little fellow. He apparently loves cuddle time, is hand gentled (in the owner’s words), and likes to be out of his cage rather than in. I actually hope that this is all true, because I would really love to have a bird that can be comfortable outside of his cage with me. I also hope that he is a male for sure. I’d rather that over a hormonal female. Although, it wouldn’t bother me too much even if he turned out to be one. The only other thing that I’m curious about is what his cage and species is. There was nothing about the size or type of the cage in the ad. Not even pictures of either of them. That and the fact that there weren’t many details in the ad are what make me suspicious.

I’m rather nervous about the whole thing. I want it to turn out nicely, but there hasn’t been a reply from the owner yet. I emailed them two days ago; on the very day that they put up the ad. Maybe I’m being paranoid or impatient, but still. I’m also worried about getting the lovebird itself. I’ve only ever had budgies and finches, so it will be different having a new species in my house for a change. I know a good deal about birds in general so I think I can adjust.

I might just buy myself a few books on Lovebirds and get busy soon, though… and I’ll update if I get any further word from the owner. 🙂
